What does a safety communication mean?

Adverse-event reports justify taking a risk seriously, but the list alone cannot tell us how frequently each problem occurs. That needs additional information, including numbers of procedures and the assessment method. We should neither hide the warning nor derive unsupported rates from it. People deserve accurate information about both known risks and remaining uncertainties.

How can we set realistic expectations?

During consultation, list the main concern, desired change and risks you consider unacceptable. Ask about alternatives and whether the procedure could be postponed or not performed. The choice should not depend only on the possible size of improvement. Consider what complications would mean to you, aftercare needs and access to help. Consent should be informed, not based solely on popularity or a discount.
