What can a skin-imaging system show?

Is a software score a diagnosis?
Cosmetic imaging does not automatically constitute medical diagnosis. Even a specific FDA classification for certain algorithmic devices evaluating suspicious skin lesions describes adjunctive assessment, not standalone diagnosis. That distinction matters when reading “AI” on a device.

How does a medical device differ?
The specific regulatory record for DermaSensor states that it does not replace biopsy or clinical decision-making. Its authorization does not extend to another skin camera, application or salon analyser.

How can consistent photography help a discussion?
Agree in advance what will be compared. One image may support a discussion of texture; another may document a particular area. Request consistent capture conditions and processing so that differences are not simply attributed to filters or lighting. Ask what each score means, which data generate it and whether its clinical meaning has been validated. An attractive colour map is not a substitute for an understandable explanation.
What should we ask about the data?
A facial photograph is personal information. Before capture, ask where files are stored, who can access them and whether other uses are planned. Discuss advertising separately: agreeing to a consultation photograph should not be confused with deciding to appear publicly in marketing. These questions are independent of image quality. If a score is unclear, ask for a plain-language explanation rather than simply another automatically printed report.
